Another long election season has come to an end, and what a strange election it was! Every time I thought I knew what to expect, the unexpected happened. To quote Amos, “I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet” (Amos 7:15).
A few truths kept coming to my mind throughout the whole process. If you and I talked politics this year you probably already know what I am going to say because I was a bit of a broken record on these points:
1) God is always in control. He knew the results before the first ballot was cast, and what He ordains is for our good whether or not we see it in the moment.
2) Our ultimate hope is always in Christ and His Kingdom. Good leaders are a blessing, but we shouldn’t expect them to be saviors or fix all the world’s problems. Bad leaders are a judgment on a people, but even the worst of leaders will never undo God’s ultimate good purposes.
3) Always pray for your leaders. We are commanded to pray for our leaders (1 Timothy 2; Romans 13) regardless of how we feel about them. We should thank God for good leaders and pray for their protection and the courage to continue leading well and righteously. We should also pray for bad leaders that God would transform their hearts and redirect their minds (Proverbs 21:1).
Let’s avoid setting unrealistic expectations for President Trump. Let’s pray that God uses his second administration for good and that he is receptive to the Lord’s leading. Most of all, let’s remember to put first things first. No matter who is in the White House, we serve the King on the Throne of Heaven.
May God Bless!
