Prayer for an American Flag Raising Ceremony

O Lord God of Hosts, the King of the nations, unto You we lift our eyes and hearts on this occasion. As we raise the banner of this land, we acknowledge You as the giver of all good things, the Defender of the just, and the Judge of all the earth.

We bless You, O God, for the mercy You have shown to this Republic, for the providences that have guided her birth and growth, for the blood of patriots shed in the cause of freedom, and for the laws that have, by Your grace, thus far preserved order and peace. Cause us to remember that “Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”

Grant, O Lord, that this nation, richly endowed by Your providence, may be a light among the nations, a blessing to all peoples, and a herald of peace, truth, and righteousness to the ends of the earth.

For all the ways that we, as a nation, fail to honor You, bring us, to a solemn repentance, that as a nation we might turn from our pride and iniquity, humble ourselves before You, and seek Your mercy while it may yet be found.

Grant, O Lord, that this flag may ever fly over a land where truth is honored, where the oppressed find shelter, where justice rolls down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream. May it be a banner not only of national pride but of moral courage, compassion, and Christ-like charity.

Bless those who serve under this flag, our leaders, our soldiers, our citizens. Bless them with wisdom, humility, and a fear of Your name. May we never boast in might, but in mercy; never glory in conquest, but in compassion.

Prepare us, O God, to serve You first, that we may rightly serve our country second. To You be glory, both now and forevermore, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
